Definition

Dead Reckoning

A navigation method where the pilot calculates position by applying the known wind, true airspeed, and course to determine a heading and groundspeed, then tracks elapsed time to estimate position along the route. Dead reckoning is often combined with pilotage (visual reference to landmarks) for accurate cross-country navigation without electronic aids.
